SPEAR & WOOMERA SET
Hand carved by Jinibara Elder Uncle Noel, this is a one-of-a-kind spear and woomera set.
The spear is made of blackboy/grass tree and cotton is used to attach the head to the shaft instead of kangaroo sinew. The woomera is used to throw the spear by attaching it to the end of the spear. It increases accuracy, speed and traveling distance.
“The spear was carved with a carving tool. This is a blackboy/ grass tree spear and it’s used all over Australia. In the old way we used to use kangaroo sinew to attach the spearhead, but we used cotton. A lot of times when we put designs on spears, we would paint and scratch them on with a rock knife.
The way you throw the spear is to hook the woomera on to the end and then aim and launch it. The woomera helps you launch the spear with greater force so it does more damage. It’s a pretty handy tool and one of the main ones used for food sources. It was also used for fighting with other tribes. The spear is unique because it is barbed. There is only one way out. It was used by the warriors in our tribe.”
